Last season Liverpool and cross-city rivals Everton lost a combined total of just 11 of their 76 Premier League games; this term they have already lost 11 between them in just 26 matches.
It has been misery across the Mersey so far this season for both clubs, but where better to kick-start a revival than against your closest and oldest foes.
Both managers point to lengthy injury lists but Liverpool, in particular, should have been able to cope with the frequent absence of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard given the size of their squad and the fact that manager Rafa Benitez has signed 48 players since 2004 - 28 more than Manchester United over the same period.
Everton themselves have missed arguably their two best players in Phil Jagelika and Mikel Arteta during a testing start to the season that reached a nadir on Wednesday during a first-half capitulation against Hull, which was described by manager David Moyes as one of the worst displays of his seven-year tenure as Goodison boss.
They have now won just one of their last 10 games in all competitions since the start of October and with news that their application for a new stadium has been rejected, it could be a bleak midwinter for Moyes's men.
The last time these two met was in an FA Cup replay last season and television viewers were left choking as match coverage switched to a Tic Tac commercial with two minutes of extra time remaining. It was all sweet for Toffees fans though when the coverage returned to Dan Gosling being mobbed after his goal dumped Liverpool out.
