The force is with Pompey - James

Avram Grant and Yoda

Portsmouth goalkeeper David James has likened the club's new manager Avram Grant to Yoda from Star Wars.

Grant took over from the sacked Paul Hart as struggling Pompey's new boss on Thursday and James believes his immense knowledge can help them stay up.

"He's like Yoda," James told The Sun newspaper. "His pearls of wisdom are far-reaching, he speaks a lot of sense.

"He is just what we need and I'm sure he can get us out of trouble. He's very profound and that appeals to me."

James added: "He is just what we need right now and I'm sure he can get us out of trouble.

"I have total respect for him and he will get the instant respect of all the players. He's a wonderful bloke and has got what it takes for a relegation fight."

James will miss Grant's first game in charge at home to Manchester United on Saturday with a calf injury, but hopes to be back in action in three weeks' time.

"I'm gutted that I'll not be able to play but I'm hopeful of being back quite quickly," said James.

"Having United to start is some test but we have done OK against them at our place in recent years."
