Injured Spies to miss Boks tour

Spies had played in all nine Springboks Tests so far this year

South African back-row player Pierre Spies has been forced to pull out of the squad for their European tour after an operation on a broken finger.

Spies suffered the injury playing for the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup and has been replaced in the Springboks touring party by Jean Deysel.

South Africa take on Leicester on Friday before the first Test of the tour against France on 13 November.

They will also play Italy, Ireland and Saracens during the tour.

Flanker Juan Smith was not considered for the tour because of injury, while centre Jean de Villiers and full-back Francois Steyn, who were also members of the victorious Tri-Nations squad, also miss the tour because of overseas club commitments.

Coach Peter de Villiers included nine new caps in his original touring party, as he continues to rebuild the squad which won the World Cup two years ago.

"We're number one in the world and we seriously want to stay there," said de Villiers.

"We are looking ahead so we can stay number one for many years.

"We don't want to be caught with our pants down when the first-stringers all leave the scene at the same time.

"There's still life after the 2011 World Cup and we want to leave a legacy for whoever takes over.

"It will be make or break for some of these new players and I want to see whether they have reached their ceiling or whether they can still grow."
