Ireland duo Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell will take a one shot lead over Italy and Sweden into the final round of the World Cup of Golf in China.

The pair carded an eight-under-par 64 in Saturday's fourballs to move them to 26 under par after three rounds.

But Francesco Molinari holed an 18-foot putt at the 18th as Italy shot a 61 while defending champions Sweden kept in touch with a 10-under-par round.

Japan and South Africa are six shots back with England and Wales 18 under.

McIlroy and McDowell, who have led from day one after scoring a stunning 14-under-par 58 in the opening fourballs, went into the third round with a three-shot lead.

The pair started strongly with a McDowell birdie at the second and McIlroy repeating the feat at the third.

But they both had to scramble to save par at the 17th before missing makeable birdie putts on the last.

"It was still a productive day," said McIlroy.

"The holes that we played well, we both seemed to play well and that doesn't work very well in fourball, but we both played well.

"We probably left a few shots out there, but we are still in a great position going into the final round and we are still very positive."

McDowell added: "Barring any disasters in the foursomes, I can't see anyone but the top three teams winning."

Italy's Molinari brothers made the big move of the day, sinking four birdies in the last five holes, including Edoardo's 20-foot putt on the 17th, for a flawless 11 under par 61.

Swedish pairing Henrik Stenson and Robert Karlsson, who are yet to drop a shot this week, began their round with four birdies in five holes on the front nine, but Stenson missed a six-foot eagle putt on 15.

The world number seven made amends at the last with an eight-foot birdie to set up a thrilling finale.

England's Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher sank produced a bogey-free nine-under-par 63 with five birdies on the back nine.

Welsh duo Stephen Dodd and Jamie Donaldson also sank nine birdies, but a bogey five at the 12th meant they ended with a 64.

The final round reverts to foursomes, where the teams compete using one ball.
