Canadian skier John Kucera, rated as one of his country's top medal hopes at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, has suffered a suspected broken leg.

Kucera, the downhill world champion, lost an edge and crashed into the safety netting at the season-opening World Cup super-G on Sunday.

The race at Lake Louise in Canada was delayed by 20 minutes and was won by compatriot Manuel Osborne-Paradis.

Kucera, 25, was airlifted to hospital, and is doubtful for February's Games.

"There's something seriously wrong with (his) leg," said Max Gartner, the chief athletics officer for Alpine Canada.

"They're going to bring him to the hospital and we'll see from there."

The Winter Olympics begin on 12 February making Kucera's participation doubtful if he has broken his leg.
