John Higgins and Ding Junhui were all-square at 4-4 after a battling first session in the UK Championship final.

It was an intriguing exchange of flawless safety play and top-class potting with five breaks over 60.

Ding edged ahead 2-1 with knocks of 81 and 69 but Higgins, looking jaded from his Ronnie O'Sullivan victory, won an epic 57-minute frame to level at 3-3.

China's 14th seed cleared brilliantly to lead again and an 80 from the world champion ensured another tense finish.

Ding is looking for his second UK Championship crown, while Higgins, leading 7-2 in the head-to-head with the Chinese star, is eyeing his third UK title.
