Stoke City manager Tony Pulis would not stand in the way of his assistant Peter Reid if he was offered the manager's job at Bolton Wanderers.
Former Bolton and England midfielder Reid has been tipped to replace Gary Megson, who was sacked on Wednesday.
Pulis told BBC Radio Stoke: "If Peter came to me and said he wanted to be a manager again, there's no problem.
"If people think there is something out there that was better for themselves, I would always go with them."
Reid, who played for Bolton for eight years from 1974, has not managed in the Premier League since leaving Leeds in 2003.
He left his role as coach of the Thailand national team to become assistant to Pulis at the Britannia Stadium.
But the Stoke manager said any approach from Bolton for Reid would have to be done in the correct manner.
"I don't know about the speculation," he said.
"If it's the case, I would be desperately disappointed if Peter doesn't speak to me first and Bolton didn't speak to this football club first."
Megson managed the Potters back in 1999 and also worked under Pulis as an unpaid coach for three months at the club.
"Gary's a decent person and I'm disappointed for him, but that's the way football goes," added Pulis.
"If results don't go your way there's always going to be that element of supporters who are not happy with what you do and what you don't do. You have to accept that."
Pulis, preparing his side for Saturday's FA Cup third-round home clash with York, said he would be happy to give Megson work on his return to the game.
"I will try to get hold of Gary to ask him to get involved, when he is ready there is a place for him here. There's always a place for him," he added.
"We have a soft spot for him, he was manager here and worked for me when he needed to.
"He may want to get some sun on his head now, but when he wants to put his boots on he can do that here."
