You can liken snowboarding to surfing on snow instead of on water and from the time that it first grabbed the imagination of the public in the sixties to the present, it has gone from strength to strength and it was even included as an event in the Winter Olympic Games held in Japan in the year 1998. Of late, it has certainly become a very fast growing activity that is believed to have as many as more than seven million people taking part in snowboarding in the US, with many more taking to it in other parts of the world as well.

A Winter Activity

Of course, snowboarding takes place in the winters and so you will have to hang up your snowboards during the hot seasons though you should head to a snowboarding resort if you really want to get in some exciting snowboarding. You should also have proper snowboarding equipment which includes helmet, boots as well as the snowboard, and if you don't want to buy the equipment outright, there are numerous firms that will gladly rent out the same to you.

In fact, renting out snowboarding equipment is not such a bad idea and it is especially suitable for those who are just beginning with the activity because it gives you a good idea about which brands to use as well as learn which size will suit your needs the best.

As far as different snowboarding styles go you can choose between freeride, freestyle as well as freecarve which are the most popular styles. Freeride snowboarding is very popular and widely used and it is also very easy to learn and thus will suit the beginning snowboarder since it simply requires them to ride down a mountain on any kind of slope is it mild or steep.

Freestyle snowboarding is a different form altogether and it requires that the snowboarder uses obstacles (man made) with which to do some tricks including jib as well as aerial tricks. Normally, for this style of snowboarding you would need to use what is known as the 'duck foot' stance in which you will have to place your rear foot so that it faces the rear of the snowboard.

The third form of snowboarding is the freecarve which is most often associated with racing as well as carving and not much of jumping is involved in freecarving. Regardless of the style of snowboarding that you opt for there are numerous resorts that provide suitable slopes and some resorts even have their own parks that are railed and which even have halfpipes to cater to the needs of those snowboarders that are interested in doing tricks on their snowboards.
