#1 Know the Seller

Even if you only get a name, address, and phone number, it's important to record this information. Don't be afraid to ask for identification. If there is a problem later on, you can get in touch with the person who sold the trailer to you. It's best to meet the seller at their home, if possible. Few people will try to commit such a scam if you know where they live.

#2 Know How to Inspect the Trailer

It's important to know how to inspect the trailer or to bring someone with you that does. The floors, tires, electrical and lights, as well as the hitch area are all vital to the safety of your horse. If there are problems, make sure you can fix or have these problems fixed for a reasonable price. Not all sellers are reputable. You certainly want the seller to be upfront and honest about any known problems, but unfortunately, that's not always going to happen.

#3 Know the Paperwork

Before you hand over the money, make sure you have the title and bill of sale in your hands. Some states do not require a bill of sale, but it never hurts to have this piece of paper. Look over the title and make sure there is no lien, or if there is, that it has been signed off on. You may be required to provide a release of lien. If that is needed, you'll need to get that from the seller. Ensure the seller signs and dates the title. Do not take possession of the trailer or let any money transfer hands until the title is present.

Used horse trailers for sale can be quite easy to locate. Craigslist, newspaper classifieds, horse and rider magazines, and dealers all can be a good source. Use caution when buying online and through online auctions. This will help reduce the risk that you may be purchasing a stolen trailer.
