Big freeze ravages British sport

Four rugby matches and several racing meets have been postponed or abandoned as snow and freezing temperatures play havoc with the UK's sporting schedules.

The efforts of Arsenal staff proved in vain when Wednesday's Premier League game against Bolton was called off four hours before kick-off.

This week's Carling Cup semi-finals were postponed because of the weather.

In racing, the all-weather track at Lingfield failed to live up to its name as Wednesday's meeting was cancelled.

The Surrey track would have been raceable but four inches of overnight snow left the venue and surrounding areas treacherous for the public.

Wednesday's racing at Kempton was also abandoned while Fontwell's Friday meeting and Saturday's National Hunt fixture at Wincanton have also been scrapped.

Saturday's premiership rugby clash between Sale and top-of-the-table Saracens has been put back because of fears for fans safety on their way to the stadium.

The match had previously been moved back from Friday night to give it more chance of going ahead.

But, with reports of eight inches of snow on the Edgeley Road pitch, club chiefs were also concerned that switching on the heated pitch covers would melt the snow and flood the pitch.

Sunday's game between Newcastle and Gloucester has also fallen foul of the weather.

The game between Bath and Northampton also failed to survive the big freeze, with club officials citing a mixture of health and safety risks and the increasing difficulty of making the pitch suitable to play on, for the postponement.

Friday night's Magners League match between Ulster and the Ospreys has also been postponed because of a frozen pitch.

The playing surface at Ravenhill was inspected on Wednesday morning and, with no thaw expected over the next few days, the game was called off.
