Boro move for Aberdeen's Miller

Middlesbrough have made an approach for Aberdeen striker Lee Miller.

Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee told BBC Scotland: "Middlesbrough have asked about Lee Miller. They have made an approach and the clubs are talking."

McGhee will speak to the Dons' director of football, Willie Miller, on Sunday to decide his club's position.

"If a deal is done, it will have to be done very quickly. We have to decide whether we want to keep him or sell," said the Aberdeen manager.

If Aberdeen do sell the 26-year-old, who has been capped three times for Scotland, it could fund the acquisition of Plymouth Argyle striker Steven MacLean.

MY SPORT: DEBATE

MacLean has been in talks with both the Dons and Scottish Premier League rivals Hearts but wants a permanent transfer rather than a move on loan.

Middlesbrough's Gordon Strachan knows Miller from his time in the SPL as manager of Celtic.

The Coca-Cola Championship outfit's boss has already returned to his former club to sign four players during the current transfer window.

Striker Chris Killen and midfielders Barry Robson and Willo Flood have all moved to Boro on permanent deals and defender Stephen McManus has joined them on loan.

Now McManus and Robson could be followed by Scotland team-mate Miller, who has scored four goals in 22 appearances this season.

It would be Miller's second stint in English football, having joined Bristol City, then in League One, from Falkirk for £300,000 in 2003.

After scoring only eight goals in 42 games in his first season, he was transfer-listed and eventually joined Hearts on loan.

A successful spell at Tynecastle led to a £225,000 move to Dundee United in 2005, but he moved for free a year later to the Dons, for whom he signed a two-year contract extension in May 2008.
