Darryl Fitton in action at the Lakeside
Fitton failed to fire against Chisnall

Dave Chisnall caused the first big shock of the BDO World Professional Darts by dumping out Darryl Fitton.

The fourth seed was beaten 3-1 as he joined several other seeds in making a first-round exit at the Lakeside.

Martin Phillips thumped seventh seed Dave Prins 3-0, Paul Carter upset 10th seed Martin Atkins 3-1 and Tony West beat 13th seed Mark Barilli, also 3-1.

But number two seed Scott Waites eased through his opening match against Scot Paul Hanvidge with a crushing 3-0 win.

Waites raced into a two-set lead as Hanvidge, who recently shook off a bout of dartitis, struggled.

The Scot finally claimed his first leg at the start of third set but Waite resumed control to breeze through.

He will next play another Scot, John Henderson, who shook off a mid-match wobble to beat Mareno Michells 3-1.

Henderson, the 15th seed, was comfortable at 2-0 up but having left himself double top, stuttered when the Dutchman took out 146 to claim the third set.

"I started off like a train and I was hoping I could get it done and dusted 3-0," Henderson said.

Martin's a great player and I was expecting to get bashed 3-0

Lakeside debutant Paul Carter after beating Martin Atkins

"But Mareno came storming back, he is a little fighter and I just disappeared. But I fought back and thank God, I came through."

The afternoon session concluded with Lakeside debutant Carter, who sacrificed one of his kidneys to save his sister Donna's life, upsetting Atkins.

Atkins missed several attempts at a double that would have taken the match into a fifth set before Carter sealed a 3-1 victory.

"It is unbelievable, I have just won my first game at The Lakeside!" said a delighted Carter. "I was just having fun. It could be my only year here, so I am just going to enjoy it.

"Martin's a great player and I was expecting to get bashed 3-0. But he just kept missing and missing, and I shot out well."
