Collingwood is hoping to be able to repeat his heroics for England

England coach Andy Flower has put Paul Collingwood's chances of playing in the third Test against South Africa, which starts on Sunday, at "50-50".

The Durham all-rounder dislocated a finger during England's victory in the second Test but came through a light training session on New Year's Day.

"He did more than I thought he'd do, and that's positive news," said Flower.

"We'll test it out properly on Saturday - I'd say that at the moment it's probably 50-50."

Collingwood's 91 in the first innings helped set up England's emphatic win at Durban.

X-rays revealed no fracture in his left index finger, but England have called up Hampshire's Michael Carberry as cover with all-rounder Luke Wright another option.

Carberry, 29, hit four centuries in the Championship last season and scored 1,251 runs at an average of 69.

Collingwood, 33, who picked up his injury during fielding practice ahead of the fourth day of the second Test, is in a rich vein of form for England and will be desperate to play in Cape Town.

He was at the crease in the final stages to earn a draw in the first Test, and his knock of 91 in Durban laid the solid foundation needed for England's stunning victory to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.

In Friday's practice session at Newlands, Collingwood batted for 10 minutes, did some basic fielding drills, before participating in a formal net session with paceman James Anderson bowling off-spin.

Flower added: "He had a net, did some fielding and a bit of slip-catching, and his finger felt better than he thought it might."
