Murray is looking to impress in his build-up to the Australian Open
|
Andy Murray eased to victory in his first tie in the round-robin Hopman Cup in Australia to level with Kazakhstan.
After Laura Robson's opening defeat for Britain, Murray swept aside the world number 133 Andrey Golubev to win 6-2 6-2 in the eight-team competition.
The Scot, preparing for the Australian Open in two weeks, will play at least three singles rubbers and also three mixed doubles matches alongside Robson.
The British duo will play Golubev and Yaroslava Shvedova later on Monday.
The winners of the two groups will go through to the final on 9 January in this annual tournament.
Robson and Murray are the third seeds and will also face Germany and Russia in the singles and the mixed doubles.

The day began with defeat for 15-year-old Robson who took the first set off the flu-ridden world number 52 Shvedova.
The Briton was cruising when her Kazakh opponent called a five-minute medical time out at the end of the set, but Shvedova fought off illness to win the final eight games and secure victory.
After pulling out of the British Davis Cup tie against Lithuania in March, Murray's participation in Perth is part of his preparation for the Australian Open.
Playing his first match of the new year, the 22-year-old world number four got off to a flier against Golubev, securing an early break in the fourth game.
Murray conceded just one point on his service in the opening set before breaking again to clinch it in 28 minutes.
After three weeks in Miami undergoing an intensive training regime, he looks in good form as he attempts to break his grand slam duck and there were few problems in wrapping up his win in just over an hour.
Kazakhstan are the lowest ranked team at the tournament, while Great Britain's last appearance in the competition was in 1992, when Jeremy Bates and Jo Durie lost in the first round.
