Roddick clinches Brisbane title

Andy Roddick
Roddick's victory earned him his first title on Australian soil

Andy Roddick survived a second-set collapse to defeat defending champion Radek Stepanek and win the Brisbane International title in straight sets.

The American, who has been out for three months with a knee injury, won 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (9-7) after his Czech opponent double-faulted on match point.

Top seed Roddick led 4-0 in the second set and 6-1 in the tie-break, but Stepanek hit back to hold a set point.

Roddick won the next two points before Stepanek's error gifted him victory.

It was the 27-year-old's first title in Australia in his first event back after recovering from the left knee injury he suffered in October.

After storming through the first set tie-break, he broke Stepanek in the first game of the second set, although much of that was down to his Czech opponent's fallibilities.

Stepanek hit a forehand into the net, double-faulted, mis-hit a backhand and double-faulted again on break point to hand Roddick the first game and an advantage he did not look likely to let slip as he raced into a 4-0 lead.

But Stepanek regrouped and broke twice to level at 5-5 in the Pat Rafter Arena. He also held his nerve in the tie-break after falling behind 1-6, to take the next six points but his composure left him at set point and another double fault handed Roddick the title.
