Reigning NFL champions the Pittsburgh Steelers were knocked out of the race for the Super Bowl as they failed to qualify for the play-offs.

The Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets both won to take the two remaining American Football Conference spots.

Pittsburgh beat Miami 30-24 but their ninth win from 16 games was not enough.

Brett Favre's Minnesota Vikings secured a first-round bye with a convincing 44-7 victory over the New York Giants on the regular season's final weekend.

"I think it's proof of what we're capable of doing," said veteran quarterback Favre, who completed 25 of 31 passes for 316 yards and four touchdowns.

"Where it takes us from here, I have no idea. But it was definitely a momentum boost and confidence."

Pittsburgh's season went awry with a five-game losing streak late in the season that included defeats by the lowly Chiefs, Raiders and Browns.

"I'd rather we go out with a win than a loss," said Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who threw three touchdown passes against Miami.

Receiver Santonio Holmes said: "We didn't do what we were supposed to do and take care of our business. Therefore we have to suffer with what happens."

Indianapolis and New Orleans are the top seeds in each conference, although the Colts have lost their last two games and the Saints their last three.

San Diego, second seed in the AFC, beat Washington 23-20 for their 11th consecutive victory.

Dallas have emerged as the form team in the National Football Conference, beating Philadelphia 24-0 on Sunday to take the NFC East title. They will host the Eagles again next weekend.

Defending NFC champions Arizona, who fell to the Steelers in last season's Super Bowl, lost 33-7 to Green Bay and will face the Packers again next weekend.

Baltimore secured one of the two AFC wild-card spots up for grabs after Willis McGahee ran for a career-high 167 yards and three touchdowns.

The Jets seized control from the start in a 37-0 victory over Cincinnati, who had already clinched a play-off spot.

Five other teams - Pittsburgh, Houston, Denver, Miami and Jacksonville - came into the day with at least a mathematical chance of advancing but results did not go their way.
