Anwar rejects new Pakistan role

Former Pakistan opener Saeed Anwar has turned down the chance to become the team's chairman of selectors.

The 41-year-old was offered the position after Iqbal Qasim resigned this month following Pakistan's disastrous tour of Australia.

"I don't think I would do justice to the role," said Anwar.

"But I have told him (Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt) I do want to help the Pakistan team and I can do this as a batting consultant."

Anwar added: "I personally feel that to be successful in cricket, a player needs to be mentally tough and should possess a big heart."

Pakistan have had three chiefs of selectors in the past 12 months, and the offer to Anwar followed the Australia tour in which Pakistan lost all three Tests and five one-day matches.

Anwar's record individual one-day international score of 194 (which he shared with Zimbabwe's Charles Coventry), set in 1997, was broken by Sachin Tendulkar's unbeaten 200 for India against South Africa on Wednesday.

The former Pakistan left-hander scored 4,052 runs in 55 Tests and 8,824 in 247 one-day internationals during his 14-year international career, which ended in 2003.
