Broken foot fear looms for Skrtel

Liverpool are to assess Skrtel's injury

Rafael Benitez fears Martin Skrtel may have broken his foot during Liverpool's Europa League win over Unirea Urziceni.

Defender Skrtel was stretchered off after a second-half clash with Antonio Semedo as the Reds won 3-1 to reach the last 16 with a 4-1 aggregate score.

"We don't know how serious it is but it could be a broken foot," said Liverpool boss Benitez after the second-leg win.

"That would be bad news but we will have to wait and see what happens but it was a bad tackle."

The 25-year-old Slovakian international has been a mainstay of Liverpool's central defence this season, featuring 29 times and scoring one goal in the 2-2 draw at home to Manchester City in November.

Apart from his concerns over Skrtel, Benitez was pleased with his side's resilience as they came back from a goal down against the Romanians.

Woeful defending had allowed Joao Bruno Fernandes to head the hosts into a 18th-minute lead.

But Javier Mascherano equalised with a fine long-range drive 11 minutes later.

A 40th-minute Ryan Babel strike put the Reds in front before a 57th-minute side-footed third from Steven Gerrard sealed the Anfield team's passage.

"We showed character. It was a difficult game because of the pitch. We needed to be calm and do the job properly," said Benitez.

"To play better we needed to score our goal as they were dangerous at set-pieces.

"I think once we scored a goal everything was easier and the second and third goals made things better.

"Still we had some problems but the main thing was to score; we did it and we had more control of the game."

Benitez's team will now face Lille in the next round after the French club drew 1-1 away to Turkish side Fenerbahce to advance 3-2 on aggregate.
