Ian Poulter's putter is looking red-hot in Phoenix this week
|
Britain's Ian Poulter fired a day's best 63 to get within four shots of the leaders on day two of the Phoenix Open.
The World Match Play champion's bogey-free round included five birdies on the back nine and puts him back into contention after his first-round 72.
American Mark Wilson finished with four birdies to card a five-under 66 and share the lead with Colombian Camilo Villegas (69) on 11 under in Arizona.
Anthony Kim hit six birdies on the outward nine and is one off the pace.
Less than a week after Poulter became the first Englishman to win the WGC-Accenture Match Play final, the 34-year-old surprised himself with a blistering second round in Scottsdale.
"I even booked a plane for takeoff at three this afternoon," he said. "I wasn't feeling good.
"It's just nice to go out there and hit good golf shots, play well and put myself in a position now where I've put myself into form."

The Hertfordshire star is level with compatriot Justin Rose, whose round of 70 followed up his opening round of 65.
Overnight leader Villegas had a steady day following his tournament record-equalling nine-under-par first round, and failed to edge ahead at the top of the leaderboard with a bogey on the par-four 18th.
It was Wilson though who ended his second round in confident style and admitted he was relishing the battle with his younger rivals.
"I enjoy watching these young kids," the 35-year-old said. "I did see Anthony and Rickie (Fowler) and Camilo up there and they're all very flamboyant characters - it's fun to watch them.
"I'm not a flashy player, my game is more like a Jim Furyk-style, and I'll just go about my business."
Defending champion Kenny Perry only scraped through with four late birdies to finish four-under, a single stroke ahead of the cut.
Two-time champion Phil Mickelson shot three-under for the second consecutive round to remain in the hunt.
