Slalom win brings Riesch second gold

Germany's Maria Riesch won her second gold of the Vancouver Games with an assured display in the women's slalom.

World champion Riesch, who also won the combined, led after the first run and managed to pip Austria's Marlies Schild by 0.43 seconds after the second.

Afterwards she went straight to hug her friend Lindsey Vonn, the American who straddled a gate and went out early.

Britain's Chemmy Alcott also went out after missing a gate early in the run, in poor visibility in Whistler.

Sarka Zahrobska of the Czech Republic took bronze, 1.01 seconds behind the leader, after a strong first run.

It was her country's first medal in Alpine events since Olga Charvatova was third in downhill for the former Czechoslovakia in 1984.

Riesch also had to comfort her crying sister, who was fourth after the opening run but failed to finish the course a second time.

"I was careful not to celebrate too much because I knew how disappointed my sister was," she said.

"She was crying and it hurt me. But she is young and will get more chances to win medals."

Vonn, who won women's downhill gold and bronze in super-G, competed despite a fractured finger but her Games came to an early end.

"I have the gold medal I came here for. I am going home happy, maybe a little bit more broken and bruised than when I came here but happy," she said.
