Brandt Snedeker fired a five-under-par 66 to lead going into the final round of the Phoenix Open in Scottsdale.
The American is on 14 under par, one shot clear of compatriot Scott Piercy, who scored the day's low round of 65.
Matt Every and Rickie Fowler, 21, are tied for third on 12 under par, while overnight leaders Camilo Villegas and Mark Wilson slipped off the pace.
England's Ian Poulter, who put himself in contention with a 63 on Friday, shot a 70 to move to eight under.
The leaderboard is dominated by Americans though with Snedeker at the top after a near flawless third round.
He dropped just one shot, on the par four 14th, when he failed to escape from a greenside bunker at the first attempt.
His second sand shot left him a tricky 15-foot bogey putt, which he rolled in.
Snedeker got the shot back at the par five 15th with an 18-foot putt and moved into the lead with his sixth birdie of the round at 17.
"I played really good," he said. "I'm swinging it really good right now.
"I made one mistake on 14 and was able to make a long putt to save bogey. Besides that, I'm rolling it great.
"I've been hitting a lot of really quality shots, so it was a lot of fun out there."
Anthony Kim, who started the day in the final pairing, crashed out of contention with a five over par 76 to slip back to five under.
Three shots went on the 15th where he took a triple bogey eight after finding the water twice.
