James 'to apologise to Gatland'

James did not feature in the Six Nations after the opening game

Blues coach Dai Young says wing Tom James will say sorry to the Wales management after his Six Nations walk-out before the 33-10 win over Italy.

James, 22, was overlooked when coach Warren Gatland gave a shock debut to rookie Ospreys teenager Tom Prydie, 18.

That prompted the Blues man to absent himself from the squad for the final three days of preparation for Italy.

"Tom will be the first to speak to Warren and [Wales attack coach] Rob Howley this week," said Young.

"From our point of view, it happened in the Welsh camp and has been dealt with internally by the Wales management.

"I have already spoken to Tom and he knows he has made a mistake. I'm sure he will put his hand up and say he was wrong.

"But I'm sure Warren has had enough coaching experience to have seen this before. I'm sure he will understand and won't be perturbed by it.

"Tom wants to play and have a career with Wales and I don't see why Tom should not go on the summer tour. If he is in the best two or three wingers in Wales then he should go.

"Tom was hugely disappointed. I understand he missed one training session but I can't condone what he did because if everyone left training then you wouldn't have enough players.

"He didn't handle it well and could have communicated better. He is a young boy and I'm sure he will learn from that.

"But he did it for the right reasons. He just wants to play and that was the crux of the matter."

James started Wales' first Six Nations game against England.

The wing was a controversial choice for his ninth cap ahead of Leigh Halfpenny at Twickenham.

But following Wales' 30-17 defeat - in which James missed a try-scoring opportunity - Halfpenny was recalled at his Blues team-mate's expense for the matches against Scotland, France and Ireland.

James did not feature in the match-day 22 in any of those games, then missed out when Gatland looked to explore his options as he dropped Halfpenny for the Italy Test.

"In conversations following the team announcement for the Italy game [James] indicated to national team management that he was anxious his disappointment about non-selection did not have a negative affect on the squad," said a Welsh Rugby Union statement.

He could find himself slipping further down the pecking order with both Ospreys youngsters Tom Prydie and Kristian Phillips already challenging for places on the summer tour.

Schoolboy athletics star James previously risked the anger of the national management when he was quoted as describing a two-minute appearance in South Africa in 2008 as "pointless" and a "massive disappointment".

At that time he also declared himself better than rival Mark Jones, earning Young's disapproval.
