Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will give an update on Wayne Rooney's injury on Friday 0930 BST.
The in-form striker, regarded as key to England's World Cup chances, injured his ankle in United's Champions League defeat by Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
He is expected to miss Saturday's vital Premier League clash against Chelsea.
Unconfirmed reports suggest he has suffered a ligament tear and will be out for between three and four weeks, but back in time for the World Cup.
Rooney, 24, limped off his flight from Germany on Wednesday with the aid of crutches, before heading straight to a waiting car that whisked him off for an MRI scan. Ferguson is expected to reveal the result of that scan when he addresses journalists on Friday in a scheduled news conference.
By then, England boss Fabio Capello will already have spoken to Ferguson.
Rooney went down under Mario Gomez's challenge in the build-up to Bayern's winner late in the match, and as well as missing the top-of-the-table tussle with Chelsea he seems likely to be unavailable for the second leg against Bayern, which Ferguson's men must now win to progress in the Champions League.
Beyond that, matches against Blackburn and Manchester City await, before the resumption of European duties against either Lyon or Bordeaux - assuming Bayern are beaten.
Rooney has scored 34 goals for United this season and nine in England's qualifying campaign for South Africa.
