Championship leaders Newcastle United moved four points clear at the top of the table after a hard-fought win over promotion rivals Nottingham Forest.
Substitute Shola Ameobi broke the deadlock after a goalless first-half, shooting on the turn to squeeze a fizzing shot in off the post.
Forest had been able challengers and Nathan Tyson should have scored but scuffed his header at the restart.
Jose Enrique blasted the ball past Lee Camp for Newcastle's second late-on.
Despite a goalless opening 70 minutes, this top-of-the-table clash proved a gripping encounter from start to finish, with Forest playing their part as they looked to bring their run of six away defeats to a close.
But it was Newcastle, unbeaten at home this season, who enjoyed the best of the first-half chances.
The Championship's player-of-the-year Kevin Nolan spurned a fine chance to break the Forest defence early on.
But the former Bolton man was too unselfish, passing to striker Andy Carroll when he should have taken Forest on himself.
Carroll scuffed the pass but made amends moments later, stretching to get a foot on a teasing Wayne Routledge cross to force Forest skipper Camp into a diving save.
Two penalty appeals followed at either end, referee Alan Wiley waving away both.
The first followed Radoslaw Majewski fall under the challenge of Newcastle's Mike Williamson on the edge of the box.
The second came when James Perch, restored to the Forest line-up after an ankle injury, nicked the ball off a goal-bound Peter Lovenkrands, who then stumbled to the floor.
As Wiley waved any appeals away, Carroll, attempting to force home the loose ball, danced around a string of Forest players but was unable to get his shot off.
Lovenkrands then enjoyed a fine chance just before the break as the entire Forest defence missed a cross from Jonas Gutierrez.
Camp was alert to the danger, however, and dived on the ball along with his defensive colleagues to frustrate Newcastle yet again.
Forest started brightly in the second period, Tyson almost heading home within seconds of the re-start but he directed his effort down to the floor and into the arms of Steve Harper.
As the half became steadily scrappier, Forest kept up the pressure.
But man-of-the-match Enrique, recovered from a hamstring injury, was having none of it.
The defender saved Newcastle's bacon by chesting the ball back to keeper Harper with Perch breathing down his neck.
At the other end, Danny Guthrie, making his 100th club appearance, could have made Forest pay from a set-piece.
Substitute Ameobi, on for Carroll who had suffered a knock in the first period, won a free-kick on the edge of the box, but midfielder Guthrie shot over the bar.
Ameobi proved the difference between the two sides soon afterwards though, latching on to Nolan's pass to turn and shoot beyond Camp.
Newcastle had their tails up and Routledge almost grabbed a second but his well-hit volley stung the gloves of the outstanding Camp.
Nolan then forced Camp into another fine save, the Forest captain diving to his right to palm away a vicious volley.
Camp then saved two more Guthrie free-kicks but could do little seconds later as Enrique scored his first career goal to secure all three points and edge Newcastle closer to automatic promotion.
