Roger Federer beat Florent Serra 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-3) in the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open, but it was an unconvincing display from the top seed.
The world number one was broken three times, each time when he led, and committed 35 unforced errors.
But Federer won eight consecutive service points in the tie-breakers and closed out the victory with an ace.
American Mardy Fish reached the fourth round by beating number 29 seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain 7-5 6-3.
World number 101 Fish upset defending champion and British number one Andy Murray in the second round.
Federer will next play Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic after the 16th seed defeated Horacio Zeballos of Argentina 6-4 7-5
A single break gave Berdych the first set and two more followed in the second, with Zeballos claiming one of his own.
