Birmingham & Carr charged by FA

Birmingham players surround referee
Birmingham were incensed by the late decision to give Aston Villa a penalty

Birmingham City have been handed a disciplinary charge by the Football Association following the angry scenes in Sunday's 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa.

Defender Stephen Carr is also charged with improper conduct for allegedly making an offensive gesture to fans.

Referee Martin Atkinson was surrounded by furious Blues players when he awarded Villa a late penalty.

The FA said: "The club are charged with failing to ensure their players conduct themselves in an orderly fashion."

Birmingham confirmed that Carr had requested a personal hearing after accepting the charge of improper conduct in relation to the incident, which is also being looked into by police.

Meanwhile, defender Roger Johnson, who conceded the penalty that led to Villa beating their local rivals, has also been asked to explain his comments to the media in which he attacked Atkinson.

Atkinson penalised Johnson for a challenge on Gabriel Agbonlahor with eight minutes remaining and James Milner scored from the spot to settle the game.

TV replays showed the defender had got a touch on the ball and Johnson said afterwards: "The referee was a disgrace. He's ruined the match and clearly shouldn't be doing these kind of games - it was too big for him.

"I got the ball cleanly, everyone could see that, and the ref can't make a decision if he's not sure. The rules say if you're not sure, you don't give a penalty."
