Figures from the worlds of sports and politics have paid final tributes to former International Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch.

Tennis star and fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal was a pallbearer at the funeral in Samaranch's home city of Barcelona.

King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain and Prince Albert of Monaco attended along with Samaranch's successor at the IOC, Jacques Rogge.

Samaranch died from heart failure on Wednesday aged 89.

"I would like to express my warm condolences to the family," said Rogge in a speech at an earlier private ceremony.

"You have lost a beloved father and grandfather; Spain has lost an illustrious son; the Olympic movement has lost a leader, a mentor and a friend."

Chairman of the London Organising Committee for the 2012 Games Lord Coe and Barcelona football president Joan Laporta were among the audience at the private ceremony.

The public were given a chance to pay their respects at the Catalonia state headquarters, before Nadal, along with around 30 other Olympic athletes, helped bear Samaranch to Barcelona's cathedral.

Former tennis stars Manolo Santana and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Olympic water polo champion Manuel Estiarte also formed part of the congregation.
