William Gallas could miss the rest of Arsenal's domestic season, manager Arsene Wenger has revealed.

The France international defender injured his calf just before half-time in the Gunners' 2-2 Champions League draw with Barcelona on Wednesday.

"I would say Gallas is out for five weeks. It was a gamble which did not pay off and a mistake," said Wenger.

Captain Cesc Fabregas has already been ruled out for the rest of the campaign after fracturing his leg in the match.

Arsenal, four points off leaders Manchester United, conclude their Premier League fixtures at home to Fulham on 9 May, the only league game that a five-week recovery would leave Gallas available for.

If Arsenal overcome Barcelona and either CSKA Moscow or Inter Milan in a potential Champions League semi-final, he should be fit for the final in Madrid on 22 May.

The 32-year-old was ruled out for "at least three weeks" immediately after his side had fought back to earn a draw against the defending European champions.

But Wenger conceded that he was now planning to be without his countryman for the final stages of the season.

"He could be back maybe quicker, but I just give myself five weeks because three weeks is a minimum," he said.

Wenger is committed to a more cautious approach with Gallas suffering a recurrence of an injury that had sidelined him for six weeks before Wednesday's match.

Gallas was reintroduced to the starting line-up for the first time since the 1-0 win over Liverpool on 10 February for the Champions League quarter-final.

The injury may mean the former Chelsea player has played his final match for Arsenal as his contract is set to expire at the end of this season.

Roma and Paris Saint Germain have reportedly offered him moves away from London, with Wenger delaying discussions over a new deal to focus on his side's hunt for trophies.

Wenger confirmed that there had been no change in prognosis for playmaker Andrey Arshavin who is expected to be back from his own calf injury in time for Manchester City's visit on 24 April.
