Mjallby & Lennon covet Celtic job

Celtic interim coach Johan Mjallby
Johan Mjallby retains hope of forming part of Celtic's new management team

Johan Mjallby will be disappointed if he and Celtic's interim manager Neil Lennon are not in the running to become the club's new management team.

Former Celtic defender Mjallby, who is interim coach, intends to return to his native Sweden at the end of the season.

But he believes an unbeaten run in their final three league games could boost their hopes of landing the job.

"If we win those that will be eight on the trot and at least you could say our names should be in the hat," he said.

Mjallby, who played for Celtic between 1998 and 2004, returned to Glasgow last month when Lennon took charge.

The Swede, who jumped at the chance to work with his old team-mate, said he would understand if the club opted for a more experienced manager to succeed Mowbray on a permanent basis.

Celtic will finish this season trophy-less after losing out to Rangers in the Scottish Premier League title race and exiting the Scottish Cup at the semi-final stage to Ross County, when Lennon and Mjallby were in the dugout.

However, Lennon has guided Celtic to five consecutive league wins since the sacking of Tony Mowbray.

And Mjallby insists the interim management team have improved the club's fortunes.

It's been a great experience and very enjoyable to work with the players and being at the club

"I think that after the disaster against Ross County we've seen a bit more passion from the side," Mjallby said.

"The team work harder for each other on the pitch and we saw that on Sunday against Dundee United, which was a hard game.

"We were much more solid than before. If we're solid at the back then we've got firepower up front that can change games for us."

Mjallby said the Celtic board's main task would be finding someone to take the club forward, adding that he had enjoyed his time at his old stomping ground.

"It's been a great experience and very enjoyable to work with the players and being at the club," he added. "We can only do our best."

Lennon and Mjallby are preparing their side for Saturday's visit of Motherwell, before next Tuesday's Old Firm derby and the final game of the season against Hearts at Tynecastle.
