Wenger looking to sign 'two or three' players

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says he will seek to strengthen his squad with "two or three" new players for next season.

Wenger will announce one signing before the World Cup, expected to be Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh.

But with centre-backs William Gallas, Sol Campbell and Mikael Silvestre all out of contract in June, defensive reinforcements may also be required.

"I believe in the squad I have but if I can make an addition - two or three maximum - then I will," Wenger said.

"It depends who goes. Do we manage, for example, to re-sign Gallas? We will try to strengthen our squad but we have not made any concrete contact with anybody.

"No-one knows where the market will go until the first transfers are done - the European market is virtually non-existent at the moment.

"Outside of England, apart from the big clubs, there is no market."

Wenger admits he was disappointed by comments attributed to Andrey Arshavin revealing the Russian midfielder's admiration for Barcelona.

The 28-year-old - signed from Zenit St Petersburg in January 2009 - is currently battling to be fit due to a calf problem, and may not make the trip to Blackburn on Monday.

Earlier this week, though, the forward was quoted as saying playing for Barcelona, who knocked Arsenal out of the Champions League, "would be the peak of my career".

"I am very disappointed because he shows a completely different attitude," Wenger added.

"He wants to extend his contract with us and stay with us, so the noise coming out of Russia is very difficult to explain.

"He looks to be very happy here, so you should ask him where it comes from."
