Serena Williams saw off Shahar Peer in straight sets to set up a French Open quarter-final against Australian Sam Stosur.

The world number one needed just 67 minutes to win her fourth-round match 6-2 6-2 on Court Philippe Chatrier, will now face Stosur, who upset four-time champion Sam Stosur.

Williams had won all four previous meetings with Peer, the world number 18, and never looked like suffering a first defeat on Monday.

The American made a slow start in the cold conditions, losing the first seven points, but then set about the task at hand with five points in a row to level at 1-1.

Peer struggled to cope with the depth and pace of the top seed's groundstrokes and it was no surprise when Williams moved ahead with a break at 4-2, repeating the feat minutes later to seal the set.

There was a brief moment of discomfort for the 2002 champion when she was broken back midway through the second set but Williams was able to up the pace seemingly at will, reeling off the final three games to reach the last eight at Roland Garros for the seventh time.
