Hunting in disguise is as old as man. Careful placement of your body in nature used to be difficult but with a suit made just for that purpose, your prey will never know what hit them. There are Ghillie Suits and then there are Hunting Ghillie Suits. The difference is all in the design of the suit. You should carefully consider the design and comfort of your suit in order to get the very best hunting experience possible.
When choosing a Ghillie, you might want to consider one that has no burlap or jute to get wet and stink. A Ghillie made with cotton strips sewn onto a ¾ length coat made of mesh is very lightweight and comfortable to wear and move in. It can be tossed into the washer if it gets bloody, because it has no burlap. The ¾ length makes it easy to walk through brush or stubble without picking up tons of brush and weeds, etc. by dragging the ground.
The Ghillie is very useful if you are sitting watching a field or stubble for deer. You can set up in the wide open in the stubble or lie down, sit or crouch to watch the perimeter brush lines for activity. While you sit or crouch, the human form that spooks animals is gone. If you are using a bow, sleeve guards or cotton tags removed from the inside of the arm enables you maneuverability and good aim.
When the wind is blowing in the favor of your prey, scent blockers are available to cover your human smell. Of course you will get the best result by going down wind of your prey. Scent blockers help, but arenât 100% sure, your smell is really hard to disguise from a deer that is already wary because of other hunters that have stalked it and missed their shot.
Confusing the sight of your prey is probably the most important. When you choose a Ghillie, consider the main challenges you are facing with a deerâs sense of sight. The color and pattern must blend well with the surroundings. Breaking up your silhouette is easy with a Ghillie. The suit allows you to incorporate flora and fauna from the exact area you will be hunting in. Taking a few minutes to adorn your suit with the proper greenery is going to be well worth the effort when the deer practically walk right up to you because they canât see you! The strings attached to a net body make this easy to do.
A lightweight suit is your best option for the long hunt. Being hot and unable to move easily is discouraging. The net construction allows your body sweat to evaporate and keep you cooler as you stalk the deer or have to retrieve a deer you have shot and had run on you. Taking the time to get a good fit is also important. A suit that fits right will let you have maneuverability and provide a free swing to get that rifle or bow up in plenty of time to get that perfect shot.
Hunters have used Ghillie suits for many years, starting with the Scottish game wardens that grabbed deer barehanded in order to take the live prey back for a shoot set up for royalty. It just makes sense to blend in with the terrain in order to confuse and outsmart your prey with a Hunting Ghillie Suit.
