Do you want to be a dominant player on the field? Youâve sharpened your skills, improved your batting speed, and increased the power of your throws. Unfortunately, thatâs not all you need to survive in a competitive softball environment.
This is especially the case if your team and other teams use the same set of drills and exercises. With the same skills, youâre practically equal with your opponent. So who do you gain an edge over them?
The answer: mental toughness. This is one of the toughest concepts that you can learn in softball, or in other competitive field because it doesnât depend on your physical abilities for you to be able to pull it off. But once you become a mentally tough player, youâll be a lot more dominant than ever before.
While it takes time to be a really mentally tough player, here are some softball tips that will help you get started:
Be Mindful of Your Body Language
You could have a mind-boggling bat speed, but if you slouch and you drag your bat on the plate, then you get no respect from your opponents. And when your opponents start looking down on you, theyâll have a breeze throwing pitches at you.
Contrast it with this situation: you enter the field with your back straight, shoulders squared and you carry the bat on your shoulders. Whatâs more, you look at the pitcher eye to eye. Youâre telling her that you mean business.
Well, it might not turn the pitcher into a bad just like that, but it puts the pressure on her to deliver because again, you mean business. And with pressure comes the greater chances of errors, which is what you want your opponents to commit.
Just Do It
Iâve seen a lot of promising players who never quite achieved their full potential because they were paralyzed by fear. Am I good enough? Did I perform well during the last game? These are just some of the questions that keep playing back in their heads over and over again.
Donât let the fear of failure paralyze you. Just do it. If you want to play the game, give it your all. Donât let your opponents intimidate you, because like, they have their fears too. Knowing that can give you a lot of advantage. Keep your fear to yourself and project a tougher image. Meanwhile, exploit whatever weaknesses you see in your opponent or the entire team.
Remember that you can do wonders only if you overcome any fear thatâs holding you back.
Mentally Prepare Yourself for Every Game
Mental toughness is something you turn on every time you need it. Which is why itâs important that you start mentally preparing yourself for every game that you play. Whether itâs listening to music, or meditating, do whatever you think helps you get into the playing mindset.
You canât overcome your fears overnight, just as you wonât be able to become mentally tough in a short time. But keep at it. Itâs a lot like performing exercises for your brain. The more you do it, the tougher your brain gets. At the end of the day, youâll become a lot better than players who just rely on skill to get the job done.
