Barry returns to England training

World Cup guide - England

England have been boosted by the sight of Gareth Barry training on the first day at their Rustenburg World Cup base.

The Manchester City midfielder, 29, was only included in manager Fabio Capello's 23-man squad after passing a late fitness test on an ankle injury.

Goalkeeper David James missed the outdoor session, but defender Ledley King was involved.

Ex-captain David Beckham, who is with the squad in a supporting role after an injury ruled him out, also took part.

Beckham's hopes of playing at a fourth World Cup were ended by an Achilles injury he picked up while on loan at AC Milan from his American parent club LA Galaxy.

But Capello has taken the 35-year-old to South Africa as part of his staff and he joined in the training session in a red training top worn by the England coaches.

The media were allowed access to the opening 15 minutes of Friday morning's first training session at the Royal Bafokeng campus that will be their base for the tournament.

Capello will hold a press conference at lunchtime.

England open their World Cup campaign against the United States on Saturday, 12 June in Rustenburg before taking on Algeria on 18 June and Slovenia five days later.
