Davydenko has never been past the fourth round at Wimbledon
|
Seventh seed Nikolay Davydenko suffered a major scare on his way to beating South Africa's Kevin Anderson in five sets on the first day at Wimbledon.
The Russian lost the first two sets before triumphing 9-7 in the last, in a marathon encounter on Court One.
Davydenko, playing in only his second tournament since breaking a wrist, won 3-6 6-7 (3-7) 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 9-7.
The biggest upset of the day saw Germany's Florian Mayer beat 11th seed Marin Cilic 6-2 6-4 7-6 (7-1).
Davydenko looked understandably rusty in the first two sets, but staged a comeback of Roger Federer proportions to book a second-round meeting with Daniel Brands, conqueror of Igor Andreev.
Mayer, ranked 95 in the world, looked certain to end his record of never winning a Grand Slam match, but Davydenko dug deep and joked afterwards that he had been inspired by London, scene of his ATP World Finals win over Juan Martin del Potro at the 02 in November.
"My confidence was pretty low at two sets down, but I just kept fighting and maybe I was a bit lucky," he said.
"My belief maybe came from London. I was the first match on Court One and I had never played there before - it was very good scheduling from the tournament director!"
Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic was the first men's seed to fall on day one after losing in straight sets to Michal Przysiezny of Poland. Ljubicic, who beat Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals of the BNP Paribas Open in March, succumbed 7-5 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 to join compatriot Cilic on the plane home.
