Montgomerie reveals injury scare

Montgomerie has not won a title since the European Open in July 2007

Colin Montgomerie is determined to play in the Open Championship at St Andrews in July despite suffering from a calf muscle injury for three weeks.

Europe Ryder Cup captain qualified for the Open for the 21st time in a row after a round of 62 at Sunningdale New.

"I've no idea how I did it but the muscle has torn, the pain is all through my back and it's affecting my Achilles tendon," said the 47-year-old.

"After a 62 to get in I don't want to miss out."

Montgomerie was able to complete a second round of 68 at the BMW International in Munich to reach a halfway total of six under par, which was enough to comfortably make the cut.

After managing to complete his round with the aid of painkillers, the Scotsman headed straight to the physiotherapy wagon.

"I've been seeing Germany's under-21 football team doctor; his boss is in South Africa [at the World Cup], of course," Montgomerie revealed.

"He's been very helpful because he's used to dealing with footballers who have this type of injury."
