South Africa captain Aaron Mokoena has backed Bafana Bafana assistant coach Pitso Mosimane to be their new boss.

Speaking to BBC World Service programme Sportsworld, Mokoena expressed delight at the prospect of Mosimane becoming the team's new coach.

The South African Football Association (Safa) has already confirmed that Mosimane is the only candidate.

"Pitso has been in the foundation of Bafana Bafana and he knows the ins and outs of the team," Mokoena said.

"Yes, there are lots of good coaches out there that can take the post but the fact that we have the foundation, we need someone from within the structure to build on this foundation."

Mosimane, a former international striker, joined the Bafana Bafana set-up in 2006, and at the 2010 World Cup he was the assistant to Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira, whose time in charge ended when the team went out of the tournament.

I'm sure his appointment can make a difference to South African football. I've been working with him for years and I know what kind of manager he is

Safa says Mosimane is the only candidate to take over as the World Cup hosts look ahead to the 2012 African Nations Cup qualifiers, and bid to reach the next World Cup, in Brazil.

Although the 45-year-old has been offered the position, negotiations have not yet taken place.

Mosimane will have to present his vision for the future of South African football to the association's technical committee before an agreement can be reached.

South Africa captain Mokoena told the BBC that Mosimane has already shared with team members his desire to develop the country's football much further.

"Firstly it's all about development, we had a chat with Pitso and we said that development can be much better in football in South Africa," Mokoena said.

"I'm sure his appointment can make a difference to South African football. I've been working with him for years and I know what kind of manager he is. I look forward to working with him if he gets the job."

Mosimane has long been earmarked as a future coach of Bafana Bafana. He also had success as manager of Supersport United, one of the top teams in South Africa's Premier Soccer League.
