Monty waits to name Cup deputies

European skipper Colin Montgomerie has revealed he will wait until after The Open at St Andrews to confirm his two vice-captains for the Ryder Cup.

Montgomerie will finalise his support team for the biennial match against the United States on 20 July.

He hopes to talk with Jose Maria Olazabal at this week's French Open, where the Spaniard is making a rare European tour appearance.

"He's not played and not been able to be out here," said Montgomerie.

He has deferred naming his deputies because he does not want any of them accepting and then stepping down to try to make their way into the side as players, as happened with Irishman Paul McGinley three years ago.

McGinley and Denmark's Thomas Bjorn, who won the Portuguese Open three weeks ago but is also still way outside an automatic qualifying spot, are likely contenders to assist Montgomerie at Celtic Manor from 1-3 October..
