Red Bull appeared ominously fast during the opening practice session for Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix.
Sebastian Vettel set the pace from team-mate Mark Webber, with the two a second quicker than their nearest rivals around the tight, twisty track.
Renault's Robert Kubica was third fastest, with world champion Jenson Button fourth for McLaren.
Ferrari seemed to struggle for balance - Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa were around two seconds off the pace.
Massa, who set the first timed lap of the session, was back on track at the Hungaroring for the first time since he suffered near-fatal head injuries in an accident there a year ago.
The Brazilian missed last year's race after being hit on the helmet during qualifying by a bouncing spring that had broken loose from compatriot Rubens Barrichello's Brawn.
He spent several days in an induced coma and missed the rest of the season. Massa visited the circuit medical centre on Thursday to thank the staff.
Mercedes had problems at the start, with Michael Schumacher's car coming to a halt in the pit-lane before even reaching the track.
