Appleby shoots 59 to secure win

Appleby's feat sees him join an elite group of golfers

Australian Stuart Appleby became the first non-American to shoot a 59 on the PGA Tour on his way to winning the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia.

The 39-year-old is only the fifth PGA Tour player to reach the milestone.

It comes less than a month after Paul Goydos achieved the feat at the John Deere Classic.

Appleby's round, which included nine birdies and an eagle at the 12th, saw him come from seven shots back to beat Jeff Overton by a stroke.

Overton missed a birdie putt at the 18th that would have forced a play-off.

It was Appleby's first title since the 2006 Houston Open and his ninth US PGA Tour victory overall.

He birdied the second and then began a run of four birdies at the fourth before adding another at the ninth.

He followed the eagle at the 12th with a birdie at the 16th to move into a share of the lead before closing his round with two more 10-foot birdie putts at 17 and 18

"Everything was switched on. I felt pretty comfortable out there," he said afterwards. "I liked all the reads. I liked the way the ball rolled. This course is receptive.

"Guys are shooting really low. I was fortunate to do all mine in one round."

The other players to have shot 59 on the PGA Tour are Al Geiberger (1977 Memphis Classic), Chip Beck (1991 Las Vegas Invitational) and David Duval (1999 Bob Hope Invitational).
