Dick Turpin won the Greenham Stakes at Newbury in April

Dick Turpin is among the contenders for the Juddmonte International at York on Tuesday as the Ebor Festival begins.

The horse, named after the famous 18th century highwayman who was executed in the city, was supplemented for the race at a cost of £50,000 to his owners.

Rivals to Dick Turpin, trained by Richard Hannon, in the race (at 1525 BST) include Rip Van Winkle, Byword, Twice Over and Yakkalberry.

The Juddmonte is preceded by the Great Voltigeur Stakes, a St Leger trial.

Thousands of race-goers will descend on the Knavesmire for the meeting, which boasts prize money of £2.8m over four days and is often described as "the Royal Ascot of the north".

The Ebor Handicap is the feature race on Wednesday, with the Yorkshire Oaks the highlight on Thursday's Ladies' Day and the Nunthorpe Stakes taking place on Friday.

The going is set to be good for the first day where the Juddmonte features a high-quality field of nine horses racing over an extended mile and a quarter.

King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Harbinger is the most notable absentee. He was retired last week after fracturing a leg.

The runners will be looking to join a cast list of previous winners that includes Epsom Derby winners Troy, Authorized and Sea The Stars.

Dick Turpin boasts six wins and three seconds from 11 career starts and has not been out of the first two in five runs this season.

The form of his second place in the 2000 Guineas was given a boost on Sunday when winner Makfi claimed victory in Deauville ahead of brilliant mare Goldikova and the highly-rated Paco Boy.

Richard Hughes, second in the Flat jockeys' title race behind Paul Hanagan, rides Dick Turpin and is in fine form himself after finishing top jockey at Glorious Goodwood with a record nine wins.

But it is Rip Van Winkle, runner-up in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood a year after winning that race, who is expected to start favourite.

The 2009 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winner has yet to win from three runs this year, but was only just pipped by Canford Cliffs last time.

Meanwhile, Byword and Twice Over's owner Prince Khalid Abdullah will hope to continue a trophy-laden 2010 which has already yielded an Epsom Derby courtesy of Workforce.

Byword, trained in France by Andre Fabre, beat the Henry Cecil-trained Twice Over by half a length in the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

The £650,000 Juddmonte contest also includes Cavalryman, who will be ridden by Frankie Dettori for the Godolphin team, and Italian raider Jakkalberry.

The field is completed by Kieren Fallon on a second Godolphin runner, Cutlass Bay, and Stimulation for Hughie Morrison.

Three Epsom Derby runners are among the 10 declared to line up in the Great Voltigeur Stakes (1450 BST).

Rewilding stayed on strikingly for Godolphin in the closing stages of the Classic to take third, while O'Brien's Midas Touch was fifth and Ted Spread finished 11th of the 12 runners.

Harris Tweed will run in the race after failing to make the cut, despite being second favourite, for the Ebor Handicap.

And Sir Michael Stoute expects Total Command to perform better now he is dropped in trip after finishing third over two miles in the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot.
