Wigan v Huddersfield

Wigan missed the chance to tie up their first Super League Leaders' Shield in 10 years as they lost at home to play-off hopefuls Huddersfield Giants.

In an ill-tempered contest at the DW Stadium, the Warriors suffered their third defeat in four home games despite going in with a 10-0 lead at half-time.

But two tries from Leroy Cudjoe and one from Luke Robinson turned it round.

And a stunning second-half try to put Wigan back in front by full-back Sam Tomkins ultimately proved in vain.

Wigan looked set for victory when winger Karl Pryce leapt highest to claim Paul Deacon's bomb and go over for an early try (the 50th of his career), Pat Richards pulling the touchline conversion just wide.

But the ill feeling sparked by the first of this season's three highly competitive meetings between the two sides, at Murrayfield in May, was always likely to bubble over again.

The Giants were down to 12 men when Wigan old boy Kevin Brown was sin-binned for tugging back Sam Tomkins, who remained in support after setting Richards away.

And a major first-half dust-up involving almost all 26 players eventually saw forwards from either side sinbinned, Giants' Keith Mason and Stuart Fielden, who was upset at having his ankle raked in a tackle.

But all the three were back on the park and numbers restored to parity when Wigan stretched their lead six minutes before the break.

From another Deacon high kick, Richards outjumped two Giants, the ball went backwards and Joel Tomkins sauntered in at the left corner.

Having missed his first conversion attempt, the league's top scorer slotted that one to reach the 350-point mark for the season.

But, Huddersfield were a different side after the break, beginning the fightback a quarter of an hour into the second half when Pryce was to concede a drop-out before Lawrence broke down the right, passing inside for Cudjoe to pick up and touch down.

Huddersfield, twice beaten by the Warriors already this season, then went in front for the first time when another Wigan old boy Robinson finished off a messy try in the left corner.

And, although Sam Tomkins conjured up a stunning response to put Wigan back in front, going 80 yards from dummy-half for one of the solo tries of the season, the Giants had the final word.

Loose defending allowed Cudjoe in for his second try, as he latched onto Danny Brough's clever kick.

And that, coupled with the rare event of the prolific Richards for once being outbooted, three conversions to two by Brett Hodgson, keeps the league title race alive for at least another week.
