Scotland's Martin Laird shot a six-under 65 to take a three-stroke lead into the last day of the Barclays, the first event of the US Tour's FedEx Cup.

Laird had four birdies in his opening five holes and did not drop a shot in his round for a 12-under total.

Justin Rose, who is chasing a Ryder Cup wildcard, is on seven under - two ahead of fellow Cup hopefuls Paul Casey and Padraig Harrington.

But Tiger Woods's misery continued as he shot a one-over 72.

That included a triple-bogey seven at his opening hole, to leave him nine shots adrift of the leader, alongside Luke Donald.

In joint second place on nine under are Dustin Johnson and Jason Day.

Rose, who had six birdies in his round of 65, hopes that his performance in New Jersey can help his bid to be one of European captain Colin Montgomerie's three picks for October's match against the US at Celtic Manor.

Montgomerie will name his selections after the conclusion of Sunday's final round of the Johnnie Walker Championship in Scotland.

But there will be plenty of interest in his announcement from the players who are challenging in the PGA Tour event.

"I think he makes his picks before we even start tomorrow, so this was the big day for me," Rose said after Saturday's round.

"He's got many combinations that will work for him. So it's just been nice to make a little bit of noise and shoot a great round to show him my game is there.

"I think it's a timely round of golf."
