McGregor named in Scotland squad

Rangers and Scotland goalkeeper Allan McGregor
McGregor has been called up for the first time since his breach of team discipline

Goalkeeper Allan McGregor has been named in the Scotland squad for next Wednesday's friendly against Sweden.

It is the 28-year-old's first call-up since a breach of team discipline while on Scotland duty in April 2009.

The Rangers keeper has not played for his country since being dropped following the 'Boozegate' affair.

Manager Craig Levein has named seven Rangers players in his squad and Middlesbrough's Stephen McManus also earns a recall.

McGregor was omitted from Levein's first squad to face the Czech Republic because of an eye injury.

Both he and former Rangers team-mate Barry Ferguson were axed following 'Boozegate'. The keeper is back in the fold but Ferguson ruled out a return.

Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon is sidelined with a broken arm, so McGregor will vie with David Marshall and Ibrox team-mate Neil Alexander for a starting place.

"I know we'll still linger on all the stuff that's happened in the past but I'm trying my best to get away from that," Levein said of McGregor's recall.

"Allan has played in big matches and this game won't faze him; he'll handle it no problem.

"Craig is out and in all reality, Allan will start in goals, that's no big secret.

"I am pleased with the quality of goalkeepers we have.

"The loss of Craig Gordon is one of these things. It happens in football and I feel more sorry for the lad than I do myself."

Four Middlesbrough players make the squad, including former Celtic captain Stephen McManus, who was omitted from the game against the Czechs, which Scotland won 1-0.

Kevin Thomson, Barry Robson and Kris Boyd are the other Boro players in the squad for the trip to Stockholm.

Rangers striker Kenny Miller has been named despite suffering from shin splints during the club's pre-season trip to Sydney and team-mate Kirk Broadfoot returns from injury.

"Normally when you are looking at players, there is a certain percentage in your squad which are based on current form and obviously at this time of the year, that is quite difficult," added Levein.

"So the majority of guys have been picked on what they have done in the past, rather than what they are doing now."

Wigan defender Gary Caldwell misses out as he recovers from hip surgery.

Facing Sweden will give Levein a final chance to assess his players ahead of the Euro 2012 qualifying double-header against Lithuania and Liechtenstein in September.
