Newcastle look set to bolster their midfield options after agreeing terms with FC Twente for the transfer of Ivory Coast international Cheick Tiote.
The 24-year-old has passed a medical and is now awaiting a work permit.
Tiote was part of the Twente side which won the Dutch title last season and played in all three of his country's games at the World Cup.
He would be Newcastle's fourth summer signing after the arrivals of James Perch, Dan Gosling and Sol Campbell.
If Tiote is granted a permit, he could make his Newcastle debut in Saturday's game at Wolves.
