Pakistan to decide on Yousuf role

Pakistan remain hopeful that senior batsman Mohammad Yousuf will be able to return to the team for the second Test with England, which starts on Friday.

The 35-year-old was persuaded to come out of retirement to bolster a squad thrashed by 354 runs in the first Test.

There was reported uncertainty over his documentation but a Pakistan spokesman said: "The administrative delay has been overcome. He has the visa."

Yousuf is due in England less than 24 hours before the start at Edgbaston.

"Yousuf is flying to London and is expected to reach Birmingham late Thursday and once he reaches here we will decide about his inclusion in the second Test," said Pakistan team manager Yawar Saeed.

The man himself, who has scored 7,431 runs at an average of 53, with six centuries against England, has insisted he is happy to return to the ranks.

"I can play under any captain and have never felt degraded playing under anyone. I am available to play for the team if invited with respect," he stated.

Yousuf was named the International Cricket Council Test Player of the Year following his record aggregate of 1,788 runs in 2006, but has endured a turbulent time subsequently.

He was banned from representing Pakistan in November 2008 after joining the unsanctioned Indian Cricket League, although that suspension was lifted in May 2009 following an amnesty by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

However, having been elevated to the Pakistan captaincy, there was a disastrous tour to Australia in December and January.

The team lost all nine matches and following a review by the Pakistan Cricket Board he and former captain Younus Khan were handed indefinite bans.

Yousuf then announced his retirement from international cricket in March in protest at the suspension after last winter's Australia tour.

Meanwhile 18-year-old left-arm spinner Raza Hasan, brought into the team to replace Danish Kaneria, is already in England but will need a change in his UK visa before being able to play.

"We have already requested for a change in Hasan's visa so that he can play," explained Saeed.
