Usain Bolt blasts Asafa Powell in Paris (UK users only)

Jamaica's Asafa Powell has withdrawn from Friday's 100m showdown with Usain Bolt and American Tyson Gay in Stockholm because of injuries.

Powell suffered a groin injury in the Paris Diamond League meet in July and has since picked up further problems.

"I have been running very well and I was hoping that I would be in the race with a solid chance to win," said the former 100m world record holder.

"But with the way I've been feeling it would be difficult to finish the race."

The problem, described as a tightness and severe pain, prevented Powell from training for about 10 days after Paris.

The pain has since eased but the 27-year-old has been unable to train at maximum effort.

"On Wednesday, Asafa tested himself with starts from blocks and was just unable to push from the blocks without severe pain," said a statement from his management company.

"As the groin injury healed over the ensuing days, a back and hamstring problem developed."

Powell has been in excellent form this season, clocking a best of 9.82 seconds.

Only treble Olympic sprint champion and Jamaican compatriot Bolt has matched that time this season.
