Tottenham on verge of Gallas deal

William Gallas
Prospective Spurs signing Gallas spent five years at Chelsea and four at Arsenal

Tottenham are on the verge of signing former Arsenal and Chelsea defender William Gallas on a free transfer, BBC Sport understands.

The 32-year-old France international is due to undergo a medical on Friday ahead of signing a one-year deal.

Although the minutiae of the deal are still to be finalised, Gallas has agreed to take a wage cut to join Harry Redknapp's regime at White Hart Lane.

Gallas will be Spurs' second arrival of the summer following Brazilian Sandro.

Midfielder Sandro, 21, will arrive on Friday after helping Internacional to the Copa Libertadores title against Mexico's Chivas Gudalajara on Wednesday night.

A £7m deal for the defensive midfielder was agreed back in March, but Sandro - who has been learning English since - was allowed to stay with Internacional for as long as the club were in the Copa Libertadores.

"It was the farewell of my dreams," he said after lifting the trophy on Wednesday. "I dreamed of being champion and leaving with this trophy in my luggage."

While he may have to wait for his Premier League bow as he gets used to life in England, however, there will be no such worries for veteran Gallas.

Gallas, who left Arsenal this summer after rejecting their offer of a pay cut and shortened deal, is expected to accept similar terms at Tottenham.

And boss Redknapp is unworried by the defenders' connections to Spurs' fiercest rivals. Gallas spent four years at Arsenal, having spent five years at Chelsea before that.

It's not like we would be signing Tony Adams

"He's been an Arsenal player but he was at Chelsea before that and playing abroad before he arrived there," he said last week.

"It's not like we would be signing Tony Adams. He's a good player and he would be a very useful addition to our squad."

With Jonathan Woodgate still out with a long-term groin injury and captain Ledley King plagued by knee problems that have the potential to limit his playing time, Redknapp has been keen to bolster his defensive resources.

Gallas will also provide competition to the likes of centre-backs Michael Dawson, Sebastien Bassong and Younes Kaboul.

While he will not be signed in time to face Stoke on Saturday, he could be in contention to face Young Boys when Spurs host the Swiss side in their Champions League qualifying second leg on Wednesday.
