Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe has been ruled out for at least six weeks because of an ankle problem.
The 27-year-old suffered the injury in England's 3-1 win over Switzerland on Tuesday and was carried off.
"Even if it's a bad sprain, he will be out for about six weeks or so because it's a nasty one," said Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp.
Defoe will miss Spurs' Champions League group games and England's Euro 2012 match against Montenegro in October.
The timing of the injury is a real blow for the forward, who has been in impressive form and scored a hat-trick in England's 4-0 victory against Bulgaria in the opening qualifier last Friday.
And it is also another slice of bad luck for Tottenham and Redknapp because centre-back Michael Dawson will be sidelined for eight weeks after being injured in the match against Bulgaria at Wembley.
