By Chris Bevan

1946: And at White Hart Lane too.

1945: We are under way in Spain and Scotland.

1942: Right, the players are in the tunnel at The Mestalla, White Hart Lane and Ibrox. We are going to hear your favourite anthem very soon...

Sir Alex Ferguson on Rio Ferdinand playing for Manchester United tonight despite his ongoing back problems: "It's a very tough job, we've had some dour games against Valencia and their system is almost exactly the same as when we played them 12 years ago. Rio's experience is vital for us - we need to keep possession of the ball tonight and he's good at that. We need to get rid of the carelessness, that's what we've been scratching our heads at."

1939: I'll be keeping you up to date with Rangers' progress here but, if you want to concentrate on their game with Bursapor, then join Stevie Miller in his text commentary dedicated to that game. Oh, and if you want to listen to live BBC Radio 5 live commentary of Valencia-Man Utd then give this page a manual refresh. Got that? Good.

1935: In case you were wondering, Wet Jim (see 1915) wasn't fibbing - it's pouring down at White Hart Lane.

From HotdogSalesman on 606: "Does the twitterer Andy Szpuk know that we have injuries, or that we still have five players there capable of scoring? Or realise we have to stop this predilection for giving away goals?"

xoxjordanaxox on Twitter: "Why are people overrating this very average Valencia side? yes they're top of La Liga, but its only after five games!!!"

1929: This isn't a subject that Manchester United or Valencia fans will like talking about, but the combined debt of the two sides battling it out at the Mestalla tonight is a mind-boggling £1,136m. That's £716m for United and £420m for the Spaniards. For a cautionary tale about the consequences of clubs stretching their finances to the limit, check out this Daily Telegraph article on Valencia's current problems that forced them to sell Davids Villa and Silva in the summer, and have left them unable to finish building their new stadium.

AndySzpuk on Twitter: "United's line-up is looking very defensive - Sir Alex is clearly anticipating a tough contest."

1920: FULL-TIME Rubin Kazan 1-1 Barcelona

1919: A quick and not-actually-as-random-as-it-might-seem question for you. Who is your favourite Belgian goalkeeper? It will always be Jean-Marie Pfaff for me but running him a close second is Michel Preud'homme who, as it happens, replaced Steve McLaren as boss of FC Twente this summer. If you want to read more about the coach who will be trying to bring about Tottenham's downfall tonight, then you should head in the direction of Phil Minshull's excellent blog about the man (and his famous mullet) on the BBC website.

From Wet Jim, soaked through and having a White Hart Lane dinner in the pouring rain (double cheese 1/2 pounder, hold the onions), via text: "Two Champions League games, two nights of torrential rain. Not sure the gods are with us on this campaign."

1915: When I said 'all Barcelona', I meant 'mostly'. It's actually Rubin who have just had a glorious chance to snatch victory but Obafemi Martins has just headed against a post from point-blank range. A huge waste.

Valencia v Man Utd team news
Jonathan Stevenson reports: "Manchester United might be missing some star names, but they do have Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic together in defence for the first time all season. In midfield, Anderson makes his first non-Carling Cup start since February, while Michael Carrick returns after a month-long absence. Dimitar Berbatov ploughs a lone furrow up top. Valencia, unbeaten in 11 home games in Europe and top of La Liga are without midfielders Vicente and Ever Banega, but the in-form Roberto Soldado leads their line."

Tottenham v FC Twente team news
Mandeep Sanghera reports: "Tottenham keeper Heurelho Gomes, centre-back Ledley King, left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto and striker Roman Pvlyuchenko return to the starting line-up. Winger Aaron Lennon is one of those that has to make way. FC Twente make two changes from the side which drew 2-2 with Ajax at the weekend. Midfielder Emir Bajrami and striker Marc Janko replace Luuk de Jong and Nacer Chadli."

1912: It is all Barcelona in Russia, where Leo Messi has come off the bench for the Spanish side... but Rubin Kazan are hanging on. There are less than five minutes of the 90 left for Messi to weave his magic.

1910: Rangers definitely have to do better at Ibrox tonight than they managed last season in the Champions League, when they lost all three of their home games, but I'm not sure whether this stat from Infostrada Sports is good news for Walter Smith's side or not ahead of their game with Bursapor: Turkish sides have only won seven of 72 Champions League away matches and have been outscored 51-153 in them. However, their last away match was a Besiktas away win at Man Utd on 25 Nov 2009. Three of those seven wins were recorded on British soil.

From I am not the best Paul Scholes is on 606: "Can't wait for tonight, really love the buzz of the big games. Valencia vs United definitely is pretty huge for us, could turn our season one way or the other."

Twente forward Bryan Ruiz on how his side hope to frustrate Tottenham tonight: "How can we be smart? Just by keeping the ball, don't let them play, press them when we can, try to score the chances we create. Because in this kind of match sometimes there are not many chances to score."

Tottenham v FC Twente line-ups
Tottenham: Gomes, Hutton, Bassong, King, Assou-Ekotto, Van der Vaart, Huddlestone, Modric, Bale, Pavlyuchenko, Crouch. Subs: Cudicini, Lennon, Jenas, Keane, Palacios, Kranjcar, Corluka.

Referee: Terje Hauge (Norway)

Valencia v Man Utd line-ups
Valencia: Cesar, Miguel, Navarro, Maduro, Mathieu, Pablo, Albelda, Costa, Mata, Dominguez, Soldado. Subs: Moya, Bruno, Topal, Aduriz, Feghouli, Fernandes, Ricardo Costa.
Man Utd: Van der Sar, Rafael Da Silva, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Carrick, Fletcher, Anderson, Nani, Berbatov, Park. Subs: Kuszczak, Owen, Smalling, Hernandez, O'Shea, Macheda, Gibson.
Referee: Viktor Kassai (Hungary)

Tottenham v FC Twente
Mandeep Sanghera reports: "You have to go back to April 1962 for the last time Spurs played a home game in the proper stages of Europe's top club competition. It's been a long wait and White Hart Lane should be buzzing as Dutch champions FC Twente come to try to spoil the party. The visitors won the Eredivisie title under ex-boss Steve McClaren last season but are now managed by Michel Preud'homme and have never beaten English opposition in Europe in nine previous attempts."

1859: By the way, that one Man Utd win in Spain that I spoke of at 1852 BST was against Deportivo La Coruna in April 2002, when David Beckham and Ruud van Nistelrooy scored in a 2-0 victory.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson on his side's task against Valencia: "It's obviously the hardest place for us to go. Spain has produced cup winning teams for years and years and you have to recognise that. The standard of Spanish football always been very good, so this is a tough game for us. We're all aware of that."

Valencia v Man Utd
Jonathan Stevenson reports: "Shorn of the services of Rooney, Scholes, Giggs and Valencia, Manchester United face a devilishly tricky test against Antonio's namesakes in the Mestalla. Despite losing Davids Villa and Silva in the summer, Los Che sit pretty at the top of La Liga with 13 points from five games, as well as thrashing Bursaspor 4-0 away in their opening Group C game. After a tame 0-0 draw with Rangers two weeks ago, United will want to kick-start their campaign in Spain."

1857: So, the goals are already, ahem, flooding in, which means only one thing is missing this evening - you lot. You know the score by now: Tweet me at chrisbevan_bbc on Twitter, join the regulars on 606 or text me via 81111 (UK) or +44 7786200666 (worldwide).

1856: There is plenty else going on tonight too, and some of it is happening right now. There are seven Champions League games starting at 1945 BST, including United, Spurs and Rangers versus Turkish champions Bursapor but one game has already started. Rubin Kazan are level with Barcelona in a match of two penalties (Cristian Noboa for the Russians and David Villa for Barca) and there is about 20 minutes to go in that one.

1852: I'm not so sure Manchester United supporters are relishing their trip to Valencia quite as much, though. So far this season, United's only away win has come against Scunthorpe. Also, in more than 50 years of European competition, and in 18 attempts, they have only managed one victory in Spain. Tonight's opponents for Sir Alex Ferguson's men? La Liga leaders Valencia. Oh, and did I mention that Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are all out too?

1849 BST: It's finally here. The evening many Tottenham fans have been waiting a lifetime for has arrived... no, not just a first-ever meeting with FC Twente, but also the first (proper) Champions League game at White Hart Lane. A night to remember? I think it is one of those already...
